MathCounts Club and Their Great Success at State
Last Saturday, March 30th, ACP’s MathCounts club attended their State MathCounts Competition. Nine students qualified to attend the event, and all competed in the individual competitions. Four of the students also competed as a cooperative team.
The MathCounts Foundation is a non-profit organization for students in grades six through eight in the United States and territories with three extracurricular math programs. The foundation allows children to participate in fun math programs no matter what level they are at. Its key philosophy is to build confidence and improve perspective about math and general problem solving.
The four-man team members were Raine Huang (7th grade), Yoobin Cha (6th grade), Doer He (7th grade), and Stevie Ortiz (8th grade-Erie). The students finished in second place, behind Basis Chandler by just half a point. A huge congratulations to our Knights for placing!
The students who competed only in the individual category were Ian Darcy, Manu Iyer, Katherine Li, Andy Ma, and Jeslyn Moon. Three of these exceptional students finished in the top ten: Yoobin Cha (4th place), Andy Ma (8th place), and Doer He (9th place).
The Arizona team for nationals is formed by the top four individual students from the state, and our own Yoobin Cha is one of them! After having finished in fourth place, Yoobin is on the State Team for Arizona. Mr. Cha will get to travel with the State Team down to Orlando, Florida in May to compete for the National Title. Congrats Yoobin and good luck at nationals!
Our remarkable and outstanding Mathletes worked very hard to prepare for this state competition by attending extra after school practices, practices over break, and individual online homework practices. Job well done, Knights!
