Badminton Begins
On Wednesday afternoon, ACP’s students and families filed into the gym to witness history be made. A sense of excitement filled the air, the audience ready to see the first badminton match in ACP history. The audience cheered as the Lady Knights took the courts to take on the Perry Pumas.
Badminton is a game that has been played since the late 1800’s. It was invented in British India, but was eventually brought back to Europe and eventually the whole world. In 1992, it was played in the Olympic Games for the first time. The point of the game is to hit a shuttlecock, made of goose feathers attached to a rubber base, across the net with a racket to your opponent. Much like tennis, if your opponent fails to return the shuttlecock across the net in bounds, you are awarded a point. Matches are often played to 21 points.
The Knights lost a tough match the Pumas, losing 9-0. All of the girls fought very hard, and never gave up hope. Perry coach Lerisa Johnson said that the girls “have good prospects and showed a lot of strength”. After the game, coaches Nath and Lake recognized some of the girls for their performances in the match, including Candy Gao for her tenacity, Sophia Chan for her positive attitude, and Alicia Nguyen for her positive attitude.
The girls will look to improve upon their performance this week when they play next Tuesday, September 12, against Highland.
