Erin Broas, Student Body President

A legacy is a permanent imprint left in time from which people can determine its importance and reputation. This year’s senior motto, “Create Your Legacy”, carries with it plenty of exhilarating expectations for the students of ACP. While such expectations seem rather daunting, ACP Knights are no strangers to achieving the extraordinary. Last week, StuGo President Erin Broas, Grade 12, attended a district board meeting to provide the CUSD governing board with an update on how well ACP-Erie is progressing and a brief list of the legacies ACP-Erie has established thus far. To start off the speech, StuGo presented the governing board members with a blanket and a the coin from ACP’s inaugural football game to thank them for their contribution in helping ACP create their legacy. Erin then went on to discuss all of the accomplishments ACP has made in the past few months. Now, let’s hear some of Erin Broas’s insight on the district meeting.

Q: Why was the district meeting held? Who was present at the meeting?

A: The CUSD Governing Board holds meetings twice a month to approve and discuss expenditures, plans, projects and policies within the school district. The board is comprised of 13 members, including President Bob Rice, Vice-President Annette Auxier, and Superintendent Dr. Camille Casteel.

Q: Who accompanied you? Did another school attend the meeting?

A: ACP StuGo members went with me to the meeting, along with Mrs. Britni Michaelson and Mr. Bickes. ACP was the only school there, but Basha High School’s turn to speak at a district meeting is up next, on September 13.

Q: What was your goal for the meeting?

A: Generally, the presidents of CUSD high schools are responsible for updating the board members on the activities and accomplishments of our schools. My goal for the meeting was also to positively represent ACP and thank the board for their part in all that ACP has been and will become.

Q: How did the district members feel about ACP’s progress this year?

A: The district members were very impressed with everything we have already managed to accomplish! They were especially happy with the 5,000 Service Hour Challenge that Nate Rowan is introducing to our school. Also, some of the Governing Board attended our school’s inaugural football game, and they congratulated us on this new facet of ACP.

Q: Where does the district see ACP in the next few years? Is there additional progress the district would like to see for ACP-Erie?

A: Although the Governing Board did not express any specific goals for our school, they hope for us to continue to grow and be successful.

Q: Will there be another meeting with the CUSD district in the future? If so, what will be the goal for that meeting?

A: Yep! The next meeting I will be speaking at is on November 29, and my main goal for that meeting is to update the board on anything they might find interesting, and overall paint the best picture I can of our wonderful school.

Q: Is there any other interesting details about the meeting?

A: ACP StuGo members stayed for the “Citizen Comments” section of the meeting, where district residents, staff members, parents, and students are allowed to address the board. The people who spoke that night all discussed ways to help mental health be less stigmatized in schools, and it was a really powerful conversation that I am glad the council was able to witness.

Thank you, Erin Broas and the rest of ACP’s Student Government for all of your hard work and dedication to making the 2017-2018 school year a remarkable experience and for helping ACP Knights create their legacies!
