Labor Day in Quarantine
Labor Day is an important holiday in America – it honors the labor movement in the United States, officially becoming a federal holiday in 1894. However, the first labor day took place on September 5th 1982 in New York being organized by the Central Labor Union where 10,000 citizens in Manhattan took unpaid time off to march for Labor rights that day. The significance of this was that workers would work up to 12-hour days, six days a week for the smallest pay they could legally be given. It was by shear dedication and drive to make a change that these Labor Workers got the change they deserved and benefited themselves and all those workers for years to come.
All that being said, Labor Day is right around the corner, and with the COVID-19 regulations still put into place, it may seem hard to find something appropriate to do over the long weekend you will have. There are a surprising amount of activities you can occupy your time with that don’t involve leaving your house, you just have to think a bit outside the box. However, if you do leave your house for the weekend, still following the regulations put into place is important. Going camping for the weekend is a great way to escape the stress-filled life most of us live and allows for a chance to fully unwind and relax, as well as escape the constant heat here in Arizona. As stressful as this year has been overall, it can be hard to find time to relax. Labor Day weekend provides the perfect opportunity for just that, doing absolutely nothing is a great way to spend your long weekend! Trying new things is always a good way to spend your time regardless of the occasion. With the social distancing being so heavily needed, you can use this to your advantage and hold a virtual get together over applications such as Zoom for example. Thinking outside the box, you can create your own drive in movie theater if you have the space, all it takes is a white bed sheet and a projector and you have a drive-in movie experience. These are all great ways to spend your time when there aren’t many more options.
With how this year is going, it is important to find the positives and make an enjoyable time for yourself and those you get to be around. Stay safe over Labor Day Knights!
