College & Career: Military Opportunities

College & Career: Military Opportunities

On April 27th, and May 4th, students interested in joining the U.S. military will be able to attend presentations concerning the unique academic, career, and military opportunities provided by the military. Representatives of the Air Force, Coast Guard, Merchant Marine, Military and Naval Academies will be present on these dates to provide information concerning the academies. Congressional staff will also be present to explain the required Congressional application and nomination process.

On the concept of military scholarships, websites like Scholarship.com offer general military scholarships for different branches of the military.

The five military academies that will be represented at the meeting are federal military institutions. Admission into the U.S. Military, Air Force, Naval, or Coast Guard Academy comes with a full scholarship, funded by the military branch in question. This scholarship covers tuition, housing and, in some cases, provides a stipend for fees, books and/or living expenses. The locations of the five respective federal military institutions are:

  • United States Military Academy (West Point, NY)
  • United States Air Force Academy (El Paso County, CO)
  • United States Naval Academy (Annapolis, MD)
  • United States Coast Guard Academy (New London, Connecticut)
  • United States Merchant Marine Academy* (Kings Point, New York)

*The Merchant Marine Academy charges no tuition.

For students attending college but still interested in committing to a military career afterwards, the ROTC scholarship is a great choice! Available at more than 1,100 colleges and universities, the majority of ROTC scholarships could gain you access to anywhere between two, three and four years of grant money to complete your degree. This would include full tuition coverage or, in its place, coverage for room and board pending qualification. Scholarships also typically include an allowance for additional books, fees, and even monthly living expenses.
