Cheer and Pom Competes in the Spring It Tournament

Once again, our cheer and pom teams displayed excellence in their performances when they competed in the “Spring It” tournament at Dobson High School last weekend. There, our high school cheer team placed in second, and our high school pom team earned a fourth-place finish. Due to their dedication, hard work, and talent, our cheer and pom team also took home the sportsmanship award for the excellence and character they exhibited at all the competitions and extracurricular activities they attend.

In the past, our cheer and pom teams have always delivered fantastic performance and routines, and it is to no surprise that they exhibited their talent at “Spring It.”

When I interviewed Elizabeth Johnson (senior), she provided me elaborate answers on what the “Spring It” tournament is, how cheer and pom prepared for it, and what her experience at the competition was like:

Q: What was your experience at the “Spring It” tournament like?

A: “Spring It” is a competition that we go to in order to practice performing in front of a crowd. In reality, the competition is just a more intense version of a practice, but don’t get me wrong; it is extremely nerve-racking. This year we attended the competition with the mindset of bringing the spirit and putting on a show, and ACP spirit-line did just that! The competition was a really good experience and practice, and we can’t wait for our looming competitions: AIA State and USA Nationals!

Q: How long did cheer and pom practice for “Spring it”, and what kind of practices did you do?

A: We learned our choreography about a month into the school year, and since then we been practicing in the mornings from 6:15-7:20 Mondays- Fridays. Between each competition we do little changes;  for example, for AIA State we will be advancing our elite stunts as well as the pyramid to increase the technical difficulty of our routines. In terms of just the “Spring it” on competition, we begun practicing that specific routine the first day back from winter break.

Q: What is the future of cheer and pom? Will there be any more tournaments later on?

A: I am ecstatic for the future of cheer and Pom. Currently, cheer is preparing for AIA State, which takes place on February 2nd, then we have Original State, which takes place on February 15th, and then finally both cheer and Pom will compete at USA Nationals February 22-24. The team is extremely excited for our upcoming competitions, and we hope to bring back some awards for ACP.

After I interviewed Elizabeth, I went to Megan Smith (senior) to obtain another perspective on the tournament:

Q: What was your experience at the “Spring It” tournament like?

A: My experience was amazing. The atmosphere is one filled with support and love. The pride and confidence of your coaches is shown on their faces,

Q: What were your favorite performances at this tournament?

A: My favorite performances were the little cheerleaders because it was amazing to see the future generation of our sport begin to compete.

Knights, if you see any members of the cheer team around campus, make sure to congratulate them on a great performance!
