Tennis is a sport that is about concentration and a clear mindset as players go against their opponents and work toward becoming victorious with their skills and fast-thinking strategies. Although tennis has roots in the ancient Mediterranean, it was not until the monks and members of the French court developed a fondness for the game in the 11th and 12th centuries that it became truly popular. Modern tennis originated in 1873 when a lawn tennis game was moved outside and altered from the medieval version. Tennis is a racquet sport that can be played by two teams of two players each or by an individual against a single opponent. Every game has the goal of moving the ball in a way that prevents the opposition from making a return. Not only does tennis help individuals maintain health and fitness, but it also helps with quick reflexes and precise hand coordination. The sport fosters a strong and well-knit sense of camaraderie, which is a very important and key part of tennis. Here at ACP, there is a wide range of sports where each student can master their skills, with a multitude of sports opportunities offered to all. Tennis is an example among the ACP sports teams, but more specifically the Girl’s Tennis Team. The team’s been unbeatable these past few weeks, winning at Eastmark High School, dominating at Poston Butte High School, and triumphing at Seton Catholic.
I had the pleasure of interviewing Megan Truong, who is on the Varsity Girl Tennis Team at ACP. She started playing tennis when she was eight years old. When it comes to winning games, Megan’s feelings the moment after winning her games are that she feels grateful and proud of herself and her teammates for all of the hard work that was put into achieving wins. She and her teammates motivate each other, no matter what the score may or may not be. Additionally, they ensure that they have fun on and off the court. Megan’s favorite part about playing this sport, especially now, is that she has a welcoming and kind team that always has her back regardless of the circumstances. Something Megan would tell someone else looking to engage in tennis is that they should “always focus on improving their game because there is always room for improvement. Be patient and take care of yourself, whether that is an injury or just a mental break.” I asked her what the most important value of tennis is, to which she responded, “In my opinion, it’s perseverance because tennis is more of a mental and strategic game.”
Being involved in tennis demonstrates the true meaning of teamwork, amplifies discipline, and enhances healthy habits, both mentally and physically. The life lessons found in tennis are abundant as well. It teaches players to accept mistakes and overcome difficulties. Not only do participants learn to compete, but they also develop a work ethic and instill sportsmanship in the best possible way, which is exactly what the Girl’s Tennis Team does! Because of their everlasting bond and the respect they have for each other, the impressive team strives to work together as one. Don’t forget to strive for the impossible and be extraordinary! Go Knights!
