Speech and Debate Has a Day to Remember
ACP’s clubs and teams have a history of overcoming hardships on the path to success. The wrestling program, which started as one student practicing in a closet after school, has transformed into one of the school’s most successful programs. The team consistently sends multiple players to state, and improves each and every year. The soccer team started out as a co-ed team, but has worked its way to being one of the better teams in the state. Additionally, the volleyball team – currently undefeated for the season – will be participating in the state championship tomorrow, November 3rd. Now, the Speech and Debate team, which has grown rapidly over the last year, is showing similar signs of success.
Despite being one of the younger organizations at ACP, the Speech and Debate team is already out there making a name for itself. Last Saturday at McClintock High School, the Knights team proved themselves to be serious opponents in the world of Speech and Debate, with many of the members on the team recording their best finishes yet in a tournament. Junior Nik Pearce, who finished 3rd, had nothing but glowing accolades to say about this blossoming program. “Our school by far was more successful at this tournament than we had [ever] been before. Several, including myself, placed in this tournament…it was a pretty big deal,” said Nik. According to Nik, this performance may be a sign of promising wins to come for Speech and Debate. “We are becoming more successful and we’re learning from our mistakes every day,” said Nik. “It’s only up from here.”
At this point, you may be asking yourself why should I join Speech and Debate? Well, Nik has an answer for that very question. “I want to tell them all to join Speech and Debate because honestly this club is great, and one way we are going to get better is to have more people. I highly encourage everyone to join.” In the now famous words of Speech and Debate teacher Mr. Rumsey, “And that’s why you should join Speech and Debate”!
