STEM at ACP

Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math; These four words make up STEM, a program focused on the scientific aspects of education. The STEM program has recently been on the rise all around the nation, and with schools focusing more on these four subjects, it highlights a different approach for students to take. Arts and English aren’t for everyone, and if this is the case for you, STEM will be your savior.

Two students at ACP Erie recently attended a Festival for the CSO Program. The Chief Science Officers Program is a way for students to make a mark around their school and help promote and clarify what STEM is. Elaina Ashton (pictured left), sophomore at ACP, explained the CSO program as, “A way for students to learn about themselves… it helps to educate the community more…”. She exclaimed that she had two scientists for parents, so she got an early introduction into engineering, what she is most interested in, and science in general. Also, Jennifer McMahon (pictured right), current freshman, expressed how she didn’t have as early of a start into the science world as Elaina. She explained she first became interested in “all the advances science makes…” and “it influences the world”. She found her passion for STEM in seventh grade while attending ACP Oakland. Both Elaina and Jennifer attended a Festival for Chief Science Officers last week. Both girls played vivid roles in the Festival; Jennifer was the “Mast of Ceremony Speaker…” meaning she introduced all who came on stage, while Elaina helped at the emcee booth and also brought booths any supplies they may have needed. Both girls expressed the most important aspect of this event was developing ties with organizations and sponsors, which would ensure a future in STEM. Furthermore, the Festival consisted of listening to lectures, sharing ideas, and creating connection between student and organization. The CSOs at the Festival discussed ways to promote the STEM program and help it become more well known school-wide. Both Elaina and Jennifer stated the program at ACP is strong due to the dedicated staff and massive amounts of clubs and organizations focusing on science and math.

Becoming a CSO was a life-changing event for both these girls, for they made lasting connections which will help them through college, and after graduation, and their love for science draws them into a close knit group of people, which anyone can be a part of. To become a part of the STEM family one must simply be involved with the STEM program. Whether it be a club, outside event, or even becoming a CSO, the STEM program welcomes you.
